Happy New Year!

As we make our way into winter, please keep in mind the following: inclement weather updates will be posted on our Facebook page, NBC12.com and sent out to the Academy email lists.  We do not always follow Chesterfield County school closings.  If in doubt, please call the Academy at 744-2801 and listen for the outgoing message for any cancellations.

SCAPA will be offering three classes in a 6-week session starting January 9.  You can try Irish dance, guitar or piano for 6 weeks and see if it’s the thing for you.  For more info, see the flyer.  There are also a few new classes starting up for the spring semester.  Check out the spring class offerings!

Voice student Lindy Pokorny has been cast in the title role in CYT’s upcoming production of Mulan Jr.!  You can see Lindy February 10-12, and February 17-19, at Tomahawk Middle.  Go here for ticket information!

Voice student Nathan Hunnicut auditioned and was selected for the District III All-District Chorus.  The students rehearse together over one weekend and give a performance for the community.  You can see Nathan with the District III Chorus at Clover Hill High School on February 11!

Rohit Bhagavatula won first place for his music composition in his school PTA Reflections competition.  Congratulations, Rohit!

Workshop Week for music students will be January 23-26.  Students will continue at the same day and time for their groups.  If you have a schedule conflict, please let Mrs. Lacey know to make arrangements to be in an alternate group.

Watch Week for dance students will be January 23-28.  Family and friends are invited to come watch their dancer’s progress during their regular class times.

SCAPA will be hosting another Master Class with a performer from The Lion King!  The class will be Saturday, February 18 from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm.  Dancers in Elementary-level classes and higher are invited to register.  The class will focus on contemporary jazz.  Fee is $30 per dancer.  To register, sign up at the front desk.

Our dance companies have performances coming up in the next few weeks! SCAPS dancers will be traveling to Baltimore next weekend for the New York City Dance Alliance competition and convention.  In addition, SCAPS and Celtic Reflection will be performing at the Virginia Dance Festival on Saturday, January 28.  SCAPS will perform at 3 pm and Celtic Reflection will perform at 7 pm.  Tickets are available at the door at James River High School.

Our Irish dance teacher, Andrea McCarney, competed at the Southern Region Oireachtas (pronounced uh-ROCK-tus, a regional championship) on December 3.  She and her fellow 8-hand reel team members placed 3rd and her 4-hand reel team placed 5th! Congratulations, Mrs. Andrea!

Andrea is now a member of the North American Irish Dance Federation (NAIDF) and Celtic Reflection will host an NAIDF-sanctioned feis on March 3!  The company is excited to be hosting their own competition—Jig By the James—at Midlothian Middle School.  Irish dancers from around the mid-Atlantic region will be coming to compete.  If you want to see what Irish dancing is all about, come out and cheer on our Irish dance students as some of them compete at their first feis!
