September 1, 2010

Welcome to the fall term!  Classes and private lessons start on September 8, so be sure to turn in your registration form at the desk to secure your space in classes or your time for private lessons.  The class schedule is available here.

Do you have your SCAPA car magnet?  Be sure to ask for one at the front desk and place it proudly on your car.  Cars spotted around town will be entered in a drawing.  The winner will receive a $100 tuition credit!

We are replacing our STAR student awards with a Student of the Month.  Each month, the teachers in each department will submit a name for selection and why that student should be Student of the Month.  The chosen student will receive special recognition for the month.  All Students of the Month will be recognized at a year-end picnic for all Academy families.

Congratulations to our 2 newlywed teachers—Jessica (Martin) Fraley and Rainey (Lacey) Jarrell!

Welcome to our new dance faculty—Nicole Schwabe & Denise Purvis!

Nicole Schwabe (Ballet) - Ms. Schwabe was a company member of the Georgia Ballet from 2004-2007.  She also performed with the Atlanta Ballet, “Riverdance the Show,” Disney Live Entertainment and Peter Gabriel’s “Us” Tour.  Ms. Schwabe will be teaching all of the Academy’s upper level ballet classes.

Denise Purvis (Lyrical, Ballet) - Ms. Purvis is currently the Director of the Dance Department for Chesterfield County’s Specialty Center for the Arts at Thomas Dale High School.  She received the 2008 Outstanding Teacher of Gifted Students Award in Chesterfield County.  Ms. Purvis holds an M.F.A. from the State University of New York at Brockport.  Ms. Purvis is also a company member with Starr Foster Dance Company.  Her Ballet/Jazz class for teens & adults is an excellent opportunity for “late starters” in ballet.

Irish dance teacher Andrea McCarney has qualified to compete in the 2010 Southern Region Oireachtas (pronounced aw ROCK tus) in December.  She will be competing in the adult 8-hand reel, a group soft shoe dance.  Dancers who place first, second or third will qualify for National Championships.

This summer Rainey Jarrell choreographed a duet that will be performed at the WAXworks Festival in New York City on September 19th.  Ms. Jarrell was one of seven artists selected to participate in the Festival and will be performing her piece, about cartoons and competition, with a dancer from Israel. This will be the first time she is performing as a dancer in New York and the first time her choreography will be performed in New York!

September 27-30 is Bring a Friend to Dance Week!  Bring a friend with you to try a dance class.  Students who bring a friend who is not currently enrolled in dance at the Academy will be entered in a drawing for fun prizes.  The class that has the most friends visiting will have a class treat!

Be sure to check out the Academy’s Facebook page and YouTube channel for videos, pictures, up to the minute news and information.  You can also receive Academy news via email.  Send a message to Aleise@swiftcreekacademy.org if you want to join the Academy’s email list.

Check back here on the 1st of each month for updated news!
